JAL JEEVAN MISSION

Jal Jeevan Mission, is envisioned to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024 to all households in rural India. The programme also implements source sustainability measures as mandatory elements, such as recharge and reuse through grey water management, water conservation, rain water harvesting. The Jal Jeevan Mission is based on a community approach to water and includes extensive Information, Education and communication as a key component of the mission. JJM looks to create a Jan Andolan for water, thereby making it everyone’s priority.
As announced by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on 15 August, 2019, the goal of the mission is to provide every rural household with a functional tap water connection by 2024.

The key objectives of Jal Jeevan Mission is to ensure:

  • Every rural household to have a Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) by 2024;
  • Assured tap water supply in adequate quantity of prescribed quality with adequate pressure on regular and long-term basis
  • Expected outcomes: Reduction in drudgery of women and girls, improvement in ‘quality of life’, enhancement in ‘ease of living’, and dignity of life to rural communities
  • Emphasis on 'service delivery' & 'functionality'
  • Community participation and ownership to ensure 'long-term sustainability' of water supply schemes
  • Surveillance of water quality by the local community involving women.

JJM is ensuring 'no one is left out' and that the poorest and marginalised, as well as the previously unreached are all provided assured tap water supply.
