PROFILE OF THE DEPARTMENT/ORGANISATION

INTRODUCTION

The Irrigation Departme is playing a vital role in the development of irrigation potential of Assam by harnessing the rich surface water and ground water resources of the state. The main service of the department is to supply water to the crop field as per demand of the cultivators and as per requirement with a view to delivering the service to the citizen/cultivators. The Department executes the works, operate the schemes and also maintains them. Irrigation and water resources development provides the basic infrastructure for the growth of economy of the country and large investment has been made for the purpose in our country.

OBJECTIVES

  • To increase agricultural production of the State by ensuring timely and adequate irrigation to the fields to cultivate high yielding variety crops.
  • To increase irrigation intensity by ensuring water throughout the year and there by encouraging multiple cropping through Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM).    
  • To develop and maintain irrigation system in support of the agricultural program of the government to provide adequate level of irrigation service on a sustainable basis in partnership with the farmers & local government units.
  • Providing employment opportunity to citizen at various level as regular employee and/ on contractual basis and also through works executed by the contractors.
  • Imparting exposure to the WUA (Water User Association) farmers for adopting scientific agriculture and for proper utilization of created irrigation potential.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Utilization of irrigation potential by equitable distribution of water through command area development

Rendering assistance to form Water Users' Association.

Collection of Service Charge from the beneficiaries.

Providing employment opportunity to citizen at various level as regular employee and/ on contractual basis and also through works executed by the contractors

DIFFERENT WINGS OF THE ORGANISATION IN THE DISTRICT

Previously this department had three different wings for execution, monitoring and maintenance of different works. These wings were Civil, Mechanical and Electrical and all these wings were headed by different Executive Engineers at the Divisional level. But as per recent Restructuring of the Irrigation Department, all these wings were amalgamated into one wing and is headed by one Executive Engineer at Divisional Level. The Kamrup District is comprised of 4(four) Divisions under a Circle (Kamrup Circle, Rangia) namely

  • Kamalpur- Rangia Division (Jurisdiction Kamalpur and Rangia LAC)
  • Hajo-Jalukbari Division (Jurisdiction Hajo and Jalukbari LAC)
  • Guwhati West-Palashbari Division (JurisdictionGuwahati West and Palashbari LAC)
  • Boko-Chaygaon Division (Jurisdiction Boko and Chaygaon LAC)
